“Elysium,” “Millers” Lead Weekend Box Office, “Percy Jackson” Flops

Playing out exactly as Friday’s numbers would have suggested, the weekend box office crowned newcomers “Elysium” and “We’re the Millers” as its top performers.

Though down from what “District 9” delivered in 2009 and what “Oblivion” earned earlier this year, “Elysium”‘s solid $30.4 million haul was enough for a first place debut. With more than $11 million in the bag when the weekend began, “We’re the Millers” added another $26.6 million to its gross for second place.

Its cumulative total now sits at $38.0 million.

Animated film “Planes” followed with a modest $22.5 million, but that total was still enough to top “Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters,” which earned $14.6 million.

That take represents a considerable decline from that of its 2010 predecessor, which started with more than $31 million in February 2010. Even when including its Wednesday and Thursday numbers, the new “Jackson” film falls short with a cumulative gross of just $23.5 million.

“2 Guns” finished fifth with $11.1 million.
