Talk of Glee “Musical” Emerges as Show Readies Season 5

As “Glee” begins constructing its fifth–and potentially penultimate–season, it brings with it news of an upcoming project.

FOX’s Gary Newman this week confirmed vague plans for a “Glee” musical, noting the network and show’s intentions to build off the 2011 “Glee Live!” tour.

“We launched a live stage business with a sold-out arena concert tour in 2011, and now a live stage musical is in the works,” said Newman.

Unclear at press time is Newman’s definition of a live stage musical.

Given the comparison to the live tour, one could interpret Newman’s words as revealing plans to adapt the hit TV series for Broadway.

But given rival network NBC’s plans to air a live stage version of “The Sound of Music,” starring Carrie Underwood, it is possible “Glee” might be considering airing a two-hour live stage show as an episode.

With several of the key “Glee” characters in New York, turning their Broadway ambitions into a live, televised adaptation of a famous musical (as some had hoped the show would do with West Side Story or Grease) would be plausible.
