“Sharknado” Ratings Improve for Encore, Still Underwhelm

SyFy was absolutely right to rebroadcast its buzzworthy “Sharknado” movie, but any talk of the movie emerging as a television ratings blockbuster was absolutely wrong.

Following last week’s 0.4 adults 18-49 rating with 1.37 million viewers, this Thursday’s encore posted a 0.6 with 1.89 million. Impressive by both SyFy original movie standards and encore telecast standards, the broadcast was a welcome part of the network’s lineup Thursday.

Unfortunately, the number is again inconsistent with the vast buzz “Sharknado” received in online and social media circles. One might have been inclined to write the initial number off due to interested fans only learning about “Sharknado” after its buzzworthy premiere, but that excuse now holds significantly less water.

Clearly, the social media voice represented that of the few rather than the many, and whatever it was that made this passionate core talk was not enough to convince the masses to tune in.
