“Pain and Gain” Leads Box Office, “The Big Wedding” Flops

Michael Bay’s modestly-reviewed “Pain and Gain” will have no trouble claiming a box office victory, but its total will fall distantly short of remarkable territory.

The film, starring Mark Wahlberg and The Rock, earned an estimated $7.5 million and will fight for the $20 million mark by the end of the weekend.

Down sharply from its debut last Friday, “Oblivion” will nonetheless parlay its $5.2 million nightly take into a second place finish. “42” earned $3 million Friday for third place.

Settling for fourth was “The Big Wedding,” which earned a mere $2.5 million in its debut. Unlikely to earn more than $7 or $8 million this weekend, “Wedding” will even fall short of underwhelming recent expectations that eyed a $10 million bow.
