“Oz: The Great and Powerful” Obliterates Box Office, “Dead Man Down” Bombs

Keeping consistent with early tracking, “Oz: The Great and Powerful” annihilated all box office competition Friday, setting itself up for the first big opening of 20123.

With $24.1 million in receipts Friday, “Oz” remains on pace for an opening weekend in the $80 million range, with its exact trajectory to be sealed by the “family matinee bump” on Saturday.

Box office disappointment “Jack and the Giant Slayer” claimed the number two position with $2.5 million. “Dead Man Down,” the only other major new release, flopped with $1.8 million.

“Identity Thief” ($1.8 million) and “21 and Over” ($1.6 million) rounded out the top five.
