“Dredd 3D” Bombs at Box Office, “HATES,” “End of Watch” Debut Modestly

No new release made a major splash at the box office Friday, but none disappointed to the extent of “Dredd 3D.”

Despite strong reviews, the latest “Judge Dredd” adaptation grossed only $2.23 million in its first outing Friday. It finished in fifth place and will be in a competitive race with “Resident Evil 5” to maintain that position for the duration of the weekend.

New release “House at the End of the Street” opened in first place with a modest $4.64 million, which gave it a slight edge over “End of Watch” ($4.60 million). The latter opened in 300 less theaters, however, so it won on a per-screen basis.

“Trouble with the Curve” followed with a $4.16 million gross, besting holdover “Finding Nemo 3D” ($2.39 million).

“The Master,” which expanded heavily this weekend, earned $1.4 million from 788 theaters. While that number is far from terrible, it is somewhat underwhelming given the film’s record-shattering performance on art house screens last weekend.
