Tired Mauricio “Shogun” Rua Knocks Out Brandon Vera; UFC on FOX Results

As far as the official result goes, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua defeated Brandon Vera by technical knockout in the fourth round of their UFC on FOX main-event.

What the record books will not show, however, is the fact that fatigue was the true victor of the contest.

By round two, Shogun was completely gassed, and Vera was not looking much better. The two moved forward and each connected with some nice punches and knees, but the pace was staggeringly slow, with both men looking like they could keel over at any time.

Vera took advantage of Shogun’s fatigue to get the upper hand in round two, but Shogun bounced back with a solid round three to reclaim the edge. And in round four, he continued the assault.

As the round reached its final minute, the damage became too much for Vera to endure, and the former champion Shogun dropped his opponent with punches. He followed up with more shots to a downed Vera, and the referee eventually stepped in to declare Vera the TKO victor.

The winner of this fight and the winner of Lyoto Machida vs. Ryan Bader were both candidates to receive the next shot at the Light Heavyweight championship. UFC President Dana White noted that he was going to give the shot to the winner who looked the most impressive, and given how the two fights played out, it seems hard to fathom that Lyoto Machida will not be that recipient.

Official Result: Mauricio “Shogun” Rua b. Lyoto Machida via TKO (punches) at 4:09 of Round Four
