“The Dark Knight Rises” Edges “The Dark Knight” at Weekend Box Office

With the dust beginning to settle, it appears that the summer of 2012 will belong to “The Avengers.”

Data is still sketchy given an industry moratorium on officially reporting box office data in the wake of the Aurora, Colorado tragedy, but indications from most sources are that “The Dark Knight Rises” earned just above $160 million this weekend. Deadline lists the estimate at $161.1 million, while Variety is simply saying “more than $160 million.”

If that number holds, “TDKR” will have slightly topped the then-record-setting $158.4 million for 2008’s predecessor “The Dark Knight.” Considered a superior film to the current “Batman” release and, in fact, the best superhero feature of all-time, “The Dark Knight” ended its domestic run with more than $533 million in receipts.

While “TDKR” is now certain to fall short of the $207.4 million opening weekend for “The Avengers” and highly unlikely to flirt with its cumulative total that now exceeds $600 million, the film should be able to claim the record for the best 2D weekend opening of all-time.

Both “The Avengers” and “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2” ($169.2 million) earned more money, but the higher ticket prices for their 3D screenings certainly played helpful roles in elevating the grosses.
