“Hunger Games” Tops Lukewarm “American Reunion” at Box Office

“American Reunion” did not bomb at the box office, but it also failed greatly to achieve the full impact of its predecessors.

The film earned only $21.5 million at the weekend box office, a far cry from the $33 million earned by 2003’s “American Wedding” and $45 million net by 2001’s “American Pie 2.”

Though it performed slightly better than the horror film, like “Scre4m,” it found out that nostalgia was not enough to bring all fans of the original trilogy back to the cinema.

Its total was enough to top third place finisher “Titanic 3D” ($17.4 million) but not enough to dethrone holdover winner “The Hunger Games,” which parlayed a $33.5 million weekend to cross the $300 million domestic barrier.

“Wrath of the Titans” ($15.1 million) and “Mirror Mirror” ($11 million) rounded out the top five.
