The television world is certainly not desperate for campy dramas featuring sexy female leads, but “Charlie’s Angels” at least managed to perform better than NBC’s flop “The Playboy Club” in its debut.
The show garnered a 6.1 overnight metered market rating in its Thursday premiere, according to TV Media Insights. The skew is unknown, but it seems a given that it will place third in the adults 18-49 demo behind “The Big Bang Theory” and “The X Factor” (and ahead of “Community”/”Parks and Recreation” and “The Vampire Diaries”).
Though the final number will definitely be a marked improvement over last year’s disastrous “My Generation” and likely fine for a new series asked to self-start in the 8PM hour, it will not be so high that the show will survive a significant viewer erosion in the coming weeks. ABC better hope fans liked what they saw.
(Update: “Charlie’s Angels” actually performed worse in adults 18-49 than would have been expected based on the overnights. At a 2.1 rating, this was a disappointing permiere).
“Grey’s Anatomy,” which followed “Angels,” showed that last year’s wear indeed took its toll. At a 7.7 for the 9PM hour and a 7.8 for the 10PM hour, the show, though still likely number two in the demo at 9PM and number one at 10PM, was way down from its previous season premieres.
