“New Girl” Premiere Wins the Ratings War, “Dancing with the Stars” Underwhelms

The big question ahead of premiere night on Tuesday was simple: would FOX’s “Glee” reclaim its adults 18-49 prominence, or would CBS’ “NCIS” open the new season as the night’s ratings winner?

Neither proved right–FOX’s freshman comedy “New Girl” debuted in force, chalking up a convincing win in the coveted young adult demo.

The Zooey Deschanel vehicle garnered an impressive 4.7 adults 18-49 rating with 10.1 million viewers, marking a sizable increase from its “Glee” lead-in (a lukewarm 3.8 with 8.9 million). It also drove “Raising Hope” to its best numbers in a long time–a 3.1 rating with 6.9 million viewers.

Over on ABC, night two of “Dancing with the Stars” showed the same signs of weakness in the current cycle. The “Meet the Cast” special averaged a 2.0 with 10.7 million viewers, while the results show was good for a 2.8 and 14.5 million. “Body of Proof” followed with a 2.3 and 9.7 million.

NBC offered “The Biggest Loser” (2.3, 6.1 million) and “Parenthood” (2.1, 5.3 million).
