“Apollo 18,” “Shark Night” Disappoint at Soft Labor Day Weekend Box Office

The first three days of the Labor Day weekend were not kind to new films, with none of the major releases generating any real box office excitement.

Particularly notable was that “The Debt,” released on just 1800 screens and forecast to be the weakest of the newcomers, actually outperformed “Apollo 18” and “Shark Night 3D.” It was no winner–scoring just $9.7 million for second place–but it really speaks to how softly “Apollo 18” and “Shark Night” came in.

“Apollo” garnered $8.7 million for third place, while “Shark Night 3D” landed in fourth on $8.6 million. Both, particularly the former, were forecast for greater totals.

“The Help” continued its victory streak with another $14.2 million for first place, while “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” was fifth with $7.8 million.
