“Captain America” Tops “X-Men,” “Thor” Totals at Midnight Box Office

An accurate projection for the weekend cannot be rendered until all of Friday’s receipts are tabulated, but “Captain America: The First Avenger” can at least claim decent success for its midnight launch.

The latest superhero film garnered $4 million in receipts. While a far cry from the $43 million earned by “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II,” the “Captain America” tally does rank as the best superhero midnight haul this summer.

Previous genre flicks include “X-Men: First Class” ($3.4 million at midnight), “Green Lantern” ($3.35 million at midnight) and “Thor” ($3.25 million at midnight).
