“Friday Night Lights,” “Parks and Recreation” Score Key Emmy Nominations

It took five seasons, but “Friday Night Lights,” one of the most critically-beloved shows of the last ten years, has finally received an Outstanding Drama Series Emmy nomination.

Announced Thursday, the Emmy nominations recognize the NBC/DirecTV family drama as one of the top series in its field, the first time it has included “FNL” in the mix. Other Outstanding Drama nominees include usual suspects “Mad Men,” “Dexter” and “The Good Wife,” with HBO newcomers “Boardwalk Empire” and “Game of Thrones” also entering the mix.

On the comedy side, “Parks and Recreation,” far and away the critical and media favorite of the 2010-11 season, enters the race after a well-received third season.

Expected Outstanding Comedy nominees like “The Office,” “30 Rock” and “Modern Family” are also in the race. “Glee,” despite losing steam and critical support for its second season, remains in the race, while “The Big Bang Theory” parlays its status as a mega-hit to contend for the top comedy crown even though its fourth season was not viewed by fans as its strongest.
