Scotty McCreery Sales Start Strong, “Idol” Winner Dominates Lee DeWyze

The quality of his upcoming album and the ability of its singles to impact radio will play huge factors, but things are looking promising in terms of Scotty McCreery’s ability to succeed commercially following his “American Idol” victory.

McCreery’s digital performance collection begins on the Billboard 200 with 23,000 downloads, topping the mere 2,000 debut for the collection from season nine winner Lee DeWyze.

Prior to that, season eight winner Kris Allen garnered only 10,000 first-week sales for his digital album, while that year’s runner-up Adam Lambert moved 16,000 downloads. Lambert went on to sell about 200,000 debut-week copies of his full-length LP, an impressive figure in the current music climate, signaling true promise for the forthcoming McCreery album. Allen’s full album moved 80,000 in its opening frame.

On the single side, McCreery’s debut single “I Love You This Big” opens with 171,000 downloads, marking the best post-“Idol” single debut since season seven winner David Cook moved 236,000 copies of “The Time of my Life.”

Season ten runner-up Lauren Alaina sold 121,000 copies of “Like My Mother Does.”

  1. Good piece, but kindly correct your sales information. Kris went on to sell over 300,000 CDs, and Adam sold 200,000 his first week. He went on to sell over 800,000 of his CD in the US alone, and over 1 million internationally. Wish Scotty all the best!

    • No reference was made to Kris’ total sales figure — just the first-week sales for his digital Idol collection (and how it compares to Scotty). The Lambert note was misleading but it has been fixed.

I have added details on Kris Allen’s debut, nonetheless, as it was a worthwhile recommendation.

  2. This article is lame. Scotty is a Country Impersonator. Second rate to
most of the Country out there. He will fade unless he can come up with something unique.

  3. I’m not sure what you’re comparing. Kris Allen sold 134,000 downloads of “No Boundaries” in the first week (worst coronation song for an AI ever.) Kris’ first single from his album “Live Like Were Dying” went platinum with over 1.6 million sold. Hope Scotty and Lauren do well.

  4. FYI: Kris Allen sold 480,000 individual digital tracks of his Idol performances plus 10,000 copies of compilation album.
