Haley Reinhart Tops “American Idol” Buzz Amid Jennifer Lopez Criticism Wednesday

Having received the “pimp slot” and the sole standing ovation on Wednesday’s “American Idol” Top 3 show, Haley Reinhart certainly did not seem to be positioned for the failure many online “Idol” commenters and critics cynically expected.

Even going against Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery, the country teens many believe “Idol” producers have wanted in their finale since the beginning, Haley found herself on the receiving end of praise for the majority of the show.

Interestingly, “You Oughta Know,” her final performance and the one that generated the least excitement from the judges (and the one that did not include her tripping as she ran back up the stage), is the one that is generating the most online search buzz. Alanis Morissette, the 1995 hit’s original artist, currently ranks at number 10 on the Google Trends chart. At number five, guest mentor Beyonce is the only other “Idol” search on the trends chart–neither Scotty McCreery nor Lauren Alaina appears.

(Update: Though Reinhart was the only contestant with a presence on Google Trends by 11PM EST, by 2AM on Thursday, Lauren Alaina’s rendition of “If I Die Young” had been generating more buzz on that search engine. The Band Perry became the second-most-searched term on Google, while Alanis Morisette was at fourth)

— While the “Idol is mistreating Haley” buzz should definitely be lighter this week–there was no Randy Jackson-Haley Reinhart verbal sparring–some discussion has emerged over Jennifer Lopez’s reaction towards Haley. J-Lo was the coldest towards Reinhart’s initial take on “What is and What Shouldn’t Be,” not joining Randy Jackson and Steven Tyler in the initial standing ovation for the performance generally viewed as her best Wednesday.

Later, she caught heat for forecasting that Lauren Alaina’s “I Hope You Dance” would be the best performance of the third round despite the fact that Haley’s had not yet performed her Alanis cover. When evaluating that final performance, she also seemed to take the criticism of Reinhart’s verses to a greater extent than Randy Jackson did, questioning whether Haley’s movements affected the vocals.

By the same token, for all the praise Lopez delivered to Scotty (she ranked his “Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not” as the best performance of the second round) and Alaina, she did not give them standing ovations the way she previously has for Reinhart.

So how did the nine performances stack up? Did Scotty McCreery seal the deal on “American Idol” season ten, or was it ladies’ night? Headline Planet’s full review is due Thursday morning.

  1. J’lo needs to put her issues aside! It’s so obvious that she has a thing for Haley and it’s not a good thing! Haley deserves to win,as far as am concerned, she was the best out of the three and more proffessional if you ask me!

  2. the judges GAVE Scotty and Lauren two EASY and popular songs. They gave Haley a song that has four different paces, three octaves, and lyrics too dirty for most of America so she has to change some of them and remember she’s doing that while she’s singing them. How in the world was that fair? Why didn’t they give Scotty and Lauren something that would have CHALLENGED them?

  3. Bite me! Grunting, growling and sashaying about the stage is not singing. Perfectly fine if you are hanging out in a Jazz club and have had a few drinks other than that can definitely do without. I’ve downloaded the majority of Scotty, Lauren and Jame’s songs, even downloaded a couple of Pia and Casey but Hailey-Never!

    • While Scotty and Lauren only sing Country, Haley sang Pop, Rock, Jazz, Country, and the Blues and ALL of them well.
By the way, the only way some of us can stand a steady diet of country is to have those few drinks!

    • What are other people listening to?

      Lauren Alaina:

“Haley has the best voice on this show and she gets the most criticism. I deserve a lot more criticism than she does. I’m Haley’s No. 1 fan. I listen to her iTunes songs over and over and over.”

  4. Shame on Jennifer Lopez!!!!!
Everyone can see the Little Green Monster on her shoulder but her. Haley is young, beautiful and can sing absolutely any style of music and do it well. Instead of being happy for Haley and mentoring her she is still trying to prove to herself and the world that she is sexy. That dance with her husband on the last show was embarrassing for me my husband and our children to watch, we turned the channel. Grow Up Jennifer!

I,m surprised Haley was able to hold her tongue as long as she did. Randy lost his mind when Rupert Murdock was behind him a few weeks ago and was horrible to Haley. I have lost all respect for him, selling out to Murdock because Murdoch was a Scotty (Country) fan. Was he trying to prove he could be as strong as Simon Cowell? Randy, don’t confuse strength and petty meanness!

This years contestants were the best ever the diversity was incredible but the way Randy and Jennifer acted made me feel ill. We Will Not Be Watching Next Year!!
We will try Christina Agulera’s show the voice.
American Idol, Stop making your show some kind or High School popularity contest and maybe you’ll be worth watching again.

P.S. Getting millions of votes doesn’t mean much when four people in one household can vote over 600 times in one night using computers and telephones. Get A Clue!!!!!!!!

HALEY YOU ARE GOING TO BE A HUGE STAR!

    • The biased judging had nothing to do with jealousy or Murdock being a fan of a particular artist.

      It was about money.

The Voice and X-Factor were breathing down their necks and Lee Dewyze’s album sold poorly last year. So they wanted Scotty or Lauren to win because success in the country music market was more of a sure thing.

They never intended for Haley to make it so far. She had so much momentum near the end that they felt like they had to pull out all the stops to halt her rise. In doing so, it became transparent they were working against her.

  5. JLo you are 41y/o and not that great a singer, while you are a good dancer and fair actress.
Haley under half your age and sexy without even try and stealing some of your thunder on Idol is no reason to act that way.
There were rumors that there would be 2 country teens in the top 3 this year at the start of the season. Alot of politics this year in Idol due to it being sold for $509M soon.
