“Bridesmaids” Starts Strong at Box Office, But “Thor” Set to Win Weekend

“Bridesmaids,” the latest well-reviewed comedy in Judd Apatow’s arsenal, got off to a strong start at the box office Friday.

The raunchy female comedy earned a healthy $7.8 million at the box office Friday, which puts it on track to cross $20 million for the weekend. Optimistic estimates were looking at the high-teens for the film, so this is definitely a slam dunk opening for fans of female-led comedies.

Of course, even with that strong opening, “Bridesmaids” will still fall short of the “Thor” tally. Having earned $9.2 million in its second Friday, “Thor” will have no trouble earning in the $30 million range for the whole weekend.

Behind “Fast Five” ($5.9 million), “Priest,” the other major new opening, landed in fourth on $5.5 million. Though the tally is not groundbreaking for a 3D film, its projected $13-15 million weekend would still slightly top what many analysts were expecting ahead of Friday’s debut.

“Something Borrowed” landed in fifth place on $2.3 million.
