Scotty McCreery, James Durbin Lead “American Idol” Buzz Wednesday

Haley Reinhart’s stunning rendition of “House of the Rising Sun” might have been the judges’ choice for performance of the night, but as far as the “Idol” audience is concerned, Scotty McCreery remains the show’s true point of intrigue.

The deep-voiced country teen, who showed immense commercial ability on “Gone” and “Always on My Mind,” is tracking as the number two search on Google as of 11:20PM EST. “Idol” performances have not been locks to generate buzz on Google Trends in recent weeks, so landing at number two is a big achievement for the presumed “Idol” frontrunner. (Update: McCreery has advanced to the top search online as of 12:15AM)

Guest mentor Sheryl Crow currently sits at number seven, while contestant James Durbin ranks as number eleven. Relative to his competition, Durbin probably had his weakest night of the competition (he was tremendous on “Without You,” but this was the first night in a while on which he, overall, failed to outshine his competition), but he still received a “this is your competition to lose” note from judge Randy Jackson.

Jacob Lusk’s cover of Nazareth’s “Love Hurts” spurred interest in the band, which sits at number thirteen on Google Trends. Haley Reinhart is down at number fifteen.

Of note is the fact that Lauren Alaina, who received glowing reviews for showing a fun side (Carrie Underwood’s underappreciated “Flat on the Floor”) and a powerhouse side (a rendition of the Righteous Brothers’ “Unchained Melody” that was definitely better than Kellie Pickler’s season five rendition), is not trending in any way on the chart. Trending is not a forecast of voting results, and the favored Lauren has no obvious reason to worry. Yet the lack of buzz does suggest that no one saw either of her performances as particularly special–her safety will have to come down to consistency and likeability.
