“Fast Five” with The Rock Dominates Box Office for Franchise High, “Prom” Bombs

The heavily-hyped “Fast Five,” which adds The Rock to the mix of franchise regulars, cruised to a dominant box office debut Friday, with Deadline sources saying the film raked in an estimated $34 million in box office receipts.

Based on that opening day tally, “Fast Five” looks set for a debut weekend in the $80 million ballpark. Ahead of nearly every industry estimate, that total would also represent an increase from the opening gross of predecessor (and previous best-performing “The Fast & The Furious” installment) “Fast & Furious,” which overperformed in its own right for a $71 million debut in April 2009.

Friday was not a rosy box office day for all new releases, however. Deadline’s estimates show that “Prom” absolutely bombed, garnering about $1.8 million. The revised weekend estimate of less than $6 million is roughly have of what some were predicting ahead of the weekend, and those projection were not impressive anyway.

“Hoodwinked Too!” was not in the top five Friday.
