The CW Renews “Gossip Girl,” “90210” For Next Season

Neither show is a significant factor in the overall Monday ratings race, but The CW’s “90210” and “Gossip Girl” garnered enough buzz and attention, particularly from the women 18-34 demographic, to warrant renewals for next season.

The news comes on the heels of improved adults 18-49 and viewership numbers for the two shows Monday night. Though the minor improvements came against weaker competition from the networks, several of which aired re-runs, they also revealed that the dramas are at least partially impacted by their scheduling positions; if given an opportunity to draw, they can lure viewers back to the table.

Although their ratings in the adults 18-49 demo had become very weak and were not even remarkable by CW standards, they both seemed like near locks for renewals due to their close attachment to the CW brand.

“90210” returns for its fourth season, while “Gossip Girl” will enter its fifth.

The network also, and even more predictably, renewed “Supernatural,” “America’s Next Top Model” and “The Vampire Diaries” for next season, leaving “Nikita,” “Hellcats” and “One Tree Hill” on the bubble. It is likely that at least one of them will be canceled.
