Ricky Gervais Returns to “The Office,” “Arrested Development” Star Debuts

Steve Carell’s Michael Scott will have his final “The Office” episode in late April, meaning the NBC flagship’s seventh season finale in May will air without its central star.

NBC, therefore, is loading up the episode with some anticipated guest appearances. Among those confirmed, according to EW, are Ricky Gervais and Will Arnett. Other surprise cameos are also expected.

Gervais, who played central character David Brent in the original English “Office,” made a brief cameo in an earlier episode this season. While that single cameo was all that was promised, the door was left open for Gervais to return based on an exchange with Carell’s character about job openings. The hint at a future appearance was read by some diehard “Office” fans as a tease that he might join the American version of the show as the new boss.

“Arrested Development” and “Running Wilde” alumnus Arnett, meanwhile, had been teased as a potential “boss” candidate in a Ricky Gervais blog post earlier this year.

Neither, however, has been confirmed as a new, permanent character.
