Season seven “American Idol” winner David Cook will be following in the footsteps of fellow contestants Chris Daughtry, Carrie Underwood and Ruben Studdard in contributing a farewell song for the show.
FOX confirmed that Cook’s cover of Simple Minds’ “Don’t You (Forget About Me),” famous for its inclusion in the soundtrack to “The Breakfast Club,” has been tapped as the ‘goodbye’ song this year.
The cover of the 1985 hit will play each Thursday night as one of the Top 13 finalists is eliminated and sent packing.
Once effective at spurring single success–Daniel Powter’s “Bad Day” became a massive hit after its inclusion on “American Idol,” while Chris Daughtry’s “Home” saw its momentum helped by the show–the farewell song has taken a lower profile in recent seasons.
This is great news. Bring on the new music from David Cook — I like the new spin on an old song (in the hands of a master) and I’m looking forward to the record.
I like Daughtry but he didn’t actually win. Carrie Underwood also performed the boot song two seasons ago. Love Cook’s version of this song! can’t wait for his album!
