“Hall Pass” Leads Box Office as “Drive Angry” Completely Bombs

A “badass” role for Nicolas Cage and countless shots of Amber Heard in short shorts were not enough to save “Drive Angry” at the box office–the 3D action film absolutely bombed in its debut Friday.

Already forecast for a disappointing weekend total in the $10 million range, “Drive” might not even reach that total. It earned only $1.6 million for ninth place in its opening night, and a revised projection now has the film earning only about $5 million over the entire weekend.

The Friday crown ultimately fell in favor of “Hall Pass,” but there is a possibility that both “Gnomeo & Juliet” and “Unknown” could overtake the film for the weekend win.

At a debut of $4.6 million, “Hall Pass” set itself up for a weekend total in the $13 to $14 million range, which is a bit below most forecasts from earlier this week.

“Unknown” placed second on Friday with $3.9 million, topping “Just Go With It” ($3.3 million) and “Gnomeo” ($3.2 million).
