“Unknown” Starts Box Office Ahead of “I Am Number Four,” “Big Mommas” Opens

While the four-day President’s Weekend race remains very much up in the air, Liam Neeson vehicle “Unknown” took the biggest forward stride Friday.

“Unknown” led the box office with $6.7 million for its debut, besting the $6.2 million for “I Am Number Four.” Going into the weekend, “Four” was expected to slightly edge “Unknown,” and some analysts still believe it will outdistance the Neeson film by weekend’s end.

“Just Go With It” landed in third with $5.2 million, topping the $4.8 million for “Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son.” “Gnomeo & Juliet,” which is expected to ramp up its total greatly as the weekend resumes, kicked things off in fifth with $4.3 million.
