David Archuleta Gets Dropped, Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” Sets Record

In the wake of disappointing sales for his “The Other Side of Down,” David Archuleta has been dropped from Jive Records, the label confirmed to THR.

The runner-up on season seven of “Idol,” Archuleta left the show with a decent fanbase. That following helped turn his debut single “Crush” into a legitimate hit, and his self-titled album ultimately went platinum.

Just over two years ago, that was nonetheless a different era–one in which the radio was far kinder to singles from “Idol” contestants. With a waning fanbase and without any newfound mainstream support, Archuleta’s 2010 album “Down” was a sales disappointment, and Archuleta has since been “released” from the Jive roster.

— Apple confirmed Friday that Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” was the fastest-selling single in the history of iTunes; it reached the million-unit mark in just five days. The song, which sparked controversy for its similarities to Madonna’s “Express Yourself” and “Vogue,” debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

  1. Sales were low for David Archuleta’s “The Other Side of Down” because Jive gave it zero promotion … people can’t buy an album they don’t know exists. It’s a great record, esp. the title track, “Stomping the Roses,” “Elevator” and “My Kind of Perfect.” Archuleta’s a huge talent with a great career ahead of him.

  2. I LOVE “The other side of Down!” I still think David Archuleta has what it takes to become a superstar!! He needs a kickass manager – and maybe some cutting edge dance lessons to loosen up on stage a bit. The fans go crazy when he moves at all.

I have faith that David will float to the top like sweet cream!!

Not to mention… he can sing circles around other mega singers in his age group!

  3. I, too wondered why David wasn’t going on tour for his new album, which I have and enjoy immensely. Now I know the record company didn’t want to spend any money, NOR have the radio stations play his music. Makes you wonder “who” was behind NOT making him in the limelight? Hmmmmmmm, could it be a competitor who was jealous of his talent — sure sounds like it to me!! I’ll remain an avid fan whatever direction his talent takes him in!

The way he was treated is NOT the way a star should be treated!! Maybe we should all refuse to purchase albums done by this same management group?

  4. It may be the best thing for his career.

Ciara said a few days ago, “I spent tens of thousands of my own money only to hear the radio PDs tell me my label didn’t want the song played”.

And this is exactly what Archuleta fans were told by the PDs immediately post-”Crush” and for two years. Fans were told “Oh, we can’t play that” by the radio stations, no matter how large the number of requests, for any other single after “Crush”.

Admittedly, not every subsequent single was radio friendly, but some absolutely were.

While a big hit in numerous places overseas where Archuleta is a big star and played along side the best known American acts, and despite fervent and pro-active fan support for him here, Archie couldn’t get airplay in America because his label didn’t want it.

If he could be a hit in other countries with multiple top singles (and he was) the same could occur in the States. But the label had other ideas.

Did they sign Archie in May 2008 the night of the “American Idol” finals to make him a star, or keep him controlled in favor of Cook or someone or something else? Who’s to say as to the reasoning.

But Ciara has had a similar experience with Jive.

Are the rumors true that Jive’s really melting down from the inside? One can only wonder.

  5. david archuleta is simply the best. i, and my sisters, have constantly said that jive never promoted david appropriately. have no idea why, but they did nothing. there are a number of songs on his new album that are much more radio friendly than some of the junk that’s playing. david will be successful without jive. i’ll be a true fan forever and continue to appreciate his music and his amazing vocals. go david. you’ll be fine.

  6. I am flabbergasted that Jive would let go off someone with David Archuleta’s outstanding talent! His voice is so rich and beautiful, his spirit is so sweet, and he is the cutest guy. His music makes me feel so energized and happy. I am a fan of him and his music, and I think he will overcome this, no matter what. Jive, you missed the mark! David, you are the greatest, and I know God will bless you with a different and better path. Keep the faith and keep singing!

  7. David A. sucks period. I was glad that he failed to win on Idol. He and his father project a sense of entitlement that makes you want to throw up. Hopefully he fades away for good.

  8. I will be a David Fan…forever..every disappointment is a blessings..this entertainment bussiness…sucks I hope david is handling this well God bless him.

  9. There is only so much a label can do for an artist. David’s first album sold very well and his “fans” certainly would have known he was coming out with “The Other Side of Down.” Why did it only sell 67K? Tweens have moved on and his older fans probably bought his album as they surely knew it was coming out but as an older fan, I certainly wouldn’t buy an album that tweens buy in general even if I like the artist. David has talent but he is awkward and probably a difficult artist to promote. Jive isn’t going to thrown money away to promote an artist who isn’t selling, let alone let him go on tour to promote and album that isn’t selling and you can’t make radio stations play songs they don’t want to play. “Crush” was his only single hit and most stations aren’t even playing it at all.

  10. CarolO’s comment: “I, too wondered why David wasn’t going on tour for his new album, which I have and enjoy immensely. Now I know the record company didn’t want to spend any money, NOR have the radio stations play his music. Makes you wonder “who” was behind NOT making him in the limelight? Hmmmmmmm, could it be a competitor who was jealous of his talent — sure sounds like it to me!! I’ll remain an avid fan whatever direction his talent takes him in!”

The “competitor” you might be inferring – could it be “David Cook” who is very supportive of Archie, who told his fans to buy his album and speaks to him at least once a week? Neither Davids are in competition with each other as they have different genres and markets. There is room for many artists in the music industry. They also have cross-over fans who enjoy both artists.

There is no conspiracy here. Archuleta failed to sell and that’s not a testimony to his lack of talent, nor lack of promotion. Promotion costs money and Jive was banking on fans coming through – they didn’t.

  11. David Archuleta is as entertaining as an abortion! Flush him down the toilet along with his ten fans and there will be more air for the rest of us to breathe!

    Long live GaGa!!
