“Chronicles of Narnia” Tops “The Tourist,” “The Fighter” Opens at Box Office

The receipt count might favor “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader,” but neither new wide release deserves to celebrate like a winner.

Both “Narnia” and Johnny Depp-Angelina Jolie starrer “The Tourist” disappointed this weekend, landing the first two slots amid a dearth of serious competition. “Narnia”‘s $24.5 million fell far short of many expectations, and while “The Tourist” was not expected to truly live up to the superstar potential of its cast, its $17 million was at the low end of any serious estimate.

“Tangled” placed third with $14.6 million, topping “Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows Part One” ($8.5 million) and “Unstoppable” ($3.8 million) in the top five.

On the platform front, “Black Swan” continued delivering with a strong $3.3 million from its 90 screens; it easily outpaced runner-up “The King’s Speech” ($592,000 from 19 screens).

Heavily-hyped “The Fighter” opened in third on that chart, scoring $320,000 from its four theaters. “The Tempest” ($45,000 from five screens) landed behind “I Love You Phillip Morris” ($158,000 from 35).

1) The Chronicles of Narnia – $24.5M
2) The Tourist – $17M
3) Tangled – $14.6M ($115.6M)
