FOX’s “American Country Awards” Bomb in Ratings, “90210” Tops “Skating”

Fans of country music awards shows have limits.

FOX’s inaugural “American Country Awards” show did not make a case to recur as an annual tradition; the festivities could only muster a 1.5 adults 18-49 rating with 5.97 million viewers. Well below the usual numbers for the CMA Awards and ACM Awards, the performance was even below that of FOX’s Carrie Underwood holiday special from last year.

After reaching red hot levels last year, ratings for music awards shows have been softening in recent months, and the introduction of a new awards show that lacked industry heritage, ample promotion and extensive participation from stars like Taylor Swift seemed like an idea tailor-made for disappointment.

Elsewhere, though The CW’s “90210” and “Gossip Girl” were essentially on par with their most recent performances, the lineup received the distinction of actually beating ABC from 8PM-9PM. Based on rounding, “90210”‘s 1.0 with 2.14 million viewers slightly tops the 1.0 with 4.93 million viewers for the 8PM portion of “Skating with the Stars,” and ABC’s numbers are possibly inflated by the Boston-area pre-emption for the Jets-Patriots game. At 9PM, “Gossip Girl” clocked in with a 1.1 and 2.08 million viewers.

  1. Things like award shows take time to build. Why is 6 million viewers bad for a show thay barely promoted. I forgot about it until it had been on an hour and a half. That doesn’t mean I wouldn’t watch it if it was promoted (and I’m reminded over and over again) like the CMA’s.

Same thing with Carrie’s special last year. It had great ratings for a variety show special that does not re-occur weekly. Ratings expectations should be based on realistic expectations of what it is and the effort put in prior to the programming.

  2. The ACA show was the best I have viewed. Trace Atkins did a wonderful job. I for one will be a viewer in th efuture. I want to go to Las Vegas next year. The energy and the true Red Neck country humor were the best! Way To Go American Country Awards! Love You

  3. In my opinion it was one of the best country awards shows I’ve seen in years! The stage was exciting, the entertainment was superb, and I was so excited to see long timers (who have actually LIVED country music) rather than kids just starting out who haven’t paid their dues. Not to mention Trace did an excellent job and kept things running smoothly. In my book it rates an A+ and I wish it would recur yearly at least. Thank you, God Bless.

  4. The American Country Awards 2010 had it all!
Hosted for Trace Adkins who had american troops live for the world to see. Trace had visited the troops about 3 weeks before the award show.
Troops loved him and invited him back, also said they would also love to see more country artists. So many perforances by country artists you do not normally see in an award show.
It was wonderful! Trace performed last if you love the song This ain’t no love song please request on your country radio!

  5. Well I didnt even know they where going to be on…not so much promotion im guessing… i couhgt like the last 30 min of the show…if only I would of know they where on 🙁 but i agree 5mill viewers preatty good!

  6. I think it was great, there was no one focusing on the entire group of nominees, instead just the winners. I hurried home from work just to get to see. I hope they do it again.

  7. Their is no way an artist can win six awards at the same show as Carrie Underwood did without something fixed in the voting. It is plain and simple common sense. Some people have taken heavy punches for her career and are getting sick of it.

  8. Great show all around….really good fun and the songs were surprisingly brilliant..didn’t like the guy with the dummy..everything else 1st class..sound..stunning lighting and very dramatic cameras but the audience and music stole the show
Hope Fox do it again next year..bravo!
