“The Event” Ratings Stay Down, “House” Tops “Dancing with the Stars”

“The Event”‘s ratings challenge simply will not let up.

Though the cast maintains its hope of a winter resurgence, the fall remains unkind to NBC’s heavily-marketed freshman drama. Monday’s new episode showed no signs of improvement with a mere 1.7 adults 18-49 rating and 5.73 million viewers.

Already unlikely to experience much of a ratings rebound based on its serialized nature, the show’s numbers have gotten so bad that even if such a rebound did occur, it probably would not be enough to erase the show’s status as a ratings ‘loser.’

The rest of NBC’s Monday lineup looked equally bleak. “Chuck” opened things up with a 1.8 and 5.55 million viewers, while disastrous freshman drama “Chase” could only muster a 1.2 with 4.57 million for a distant third place finish at 10PM.

Elsewhere, FOX’s “House” managed to win its 8PM timeslot with a solid 4.0 and 10.81 million viewers. On a nightly basis, it topped the 90-minute “Dancing with the Stars” (20.57 million, 4.0 rating, but rounded) and only fell short of “Two and a Half Men” (14.15 million, 4.5 rating) in the overall broadcast ratings race.

“Lie to Me” squandered much of its “House” lead-out, but it still managed to top “The Event” at 9PM with a 2.0 rating and 6.03 million viewers.

Of course, that note seems less impressive given the fact that a re-run of “The Middle” followed “Dancing” with a 2.3 and 10.06 million viewers at 9:30PM. “Castle” led out with a 2.5 and 9.98.

The CW aired “90210” (1.75 million, 0.9) and “Gossip Girl” (1.72 million, 0.9).

  1. Maybe the ratings wouldn’t be horrible if:

    1) they weren’t trying to rip off lost
    2) Their main character (jason ritter) wasn’t a total spaz
    3) The show wasn’t about aliens. (seriously aliens? NBC wants to make the next lost and they decide to make it about aliens?)

Most people who aren’t total dorks can’t relate to alien story lines.

  2. It will drop even more now with Bristol still in. Bottom judges scores (who know about dancing) for 6 weeks and SHE is in finals. Way to mom and Alaska and Tea Party. There are 3 less viewers for the last show now. Maybe next year they can have a Democrtic Rep. in there. TOO BAD it was a good show, now political

  3. I was a fan of The Event, and slogged through a few slow episodes hoping to get to something I could get excited about, then they got political, making the (unsaid, but strongly implied) Republican a weak sell out, and the Democratic president a guy who’s only flaw is that he cares too much. Come on guys! Do you really need to go there?

With all the problems the show has, is it wise to alienate potentially half of your viewers? As soon as I saw the scene with the flashback to the convention, I turned off the TV and will never watch that show again. Maybe I’ll get all the seasons of lost, and enjoy myself.

  4. The Event was slow out of the gate, but around the fourth or fifth episode, really started to pick up. It’s well scripted, well staged, has good special effects, an interesting plot, and is mostly well acted (with an exception being the two 20-somethings that are one of the main beats).

In short, given all of the above, I fully expect it to not be picked up for a second season. Perhaps another show about dancing, home remodeling, or high-schoolesque competitions in a tropical locale will take its place.

  5. I’m pretty disapointed that people are idiots when it comes to shows. Dancing with the Stars?? Seriously?? you want to say The Event does not have any good actors??? while neither does that show?!?

come one, we need to just end reality tv shows. i do not care about these “D list” celebs that try to jump start their career in a show that idiots watch and think their vote counts…
these people won’t even go out and vote for the presidential election, they don’t deserve &$%^&*.

After Flash Forward going down, i can easily see this getting canned. Just like Arrested Development. People are too stupid to figure the episodes / characters out, then get frustrated, then tune into the biggest loser. What?!?!?

    i can’t figure it out.
the show is unique. what compare it to lost & 24?
uh ok. lost = giligan’s island; 24 = Die Hard & Lethal Weapon.
what is your point? there is no point! This is a good show; just move it to not compete with DWTS and MNF and it will be fine.

    Tuesday works for me.

  6. Pat, you’re awesome! The Event is an amazingly addictive show. People have been infected by reality tv there’s no hope for people like us. The masses care more about other peoples business, problems, etc than to be focused on tv that encourages someone to use their mind. People are pretty sad in general who would dare compare DWTS to The Event. Lame!
