“Social Network” Wins Weekend Box Office, “Let Me In” Disappoints

The film’s apparent struggle to mobilize middle American filmgoers prevented it from making major box office waves, but critically-acclaimed “The Social Network” was still capable of a weekend box office victory.

Weekend estimates have the film earning $23 million, a total that more than doubles that of “Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole.” The family film garnered $10.9 million in its second week.

Other top five performers included “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps” ($10.1 million), “The Town” ($10 million) and “Easy A” ($7 million).

Outside of “Network,” the other new releases did meet a warm reception at cinemas this weekend. “Case 39” and “Let Me In” both bombed, placing seventh and eighth on $5.4 million and $5.3 million, respectively.

No limited releases made any impact this week, with entries like “Chain Letter” ($144,000 on 406 screens) and “Hatchet II” ($62,000 on 68 screens) disappointing.
