“The Other Guys” Starts Strong at Box Office; “Step Up 3D” Starts Soft

“The Other Guys” opened with strength at the box office Friday, garnering a first-place finish that paces it to unseat “Inception” from the top of the charts this weekend.

“Guys” grossed $13.2 million, a total that nearly doubles the opener for 2009 flop “Land of the Lost,” Will Ferrell’s last outing. That film opened to $7.1 million en route to a sub-$50 million domestic cumulative. “Guys” should have no trouble reaching the mid-30 millions this weekend.

Ranking second on Friday was new release “Step Up 3D,” which grossed a lukewarm $6.6 million. Although that figure lands slightly ahead of that of the first Friday for 2008’s “Step Up 2 the Streets,” the previous sequel actually opened on a Thursday–Valentine’s Day. Moreover, because the 3D film commands higher ticket prices, even if it does match that film’s $18.9 million opening weekend, and most believe it will fall short, it will still have attracted a smaller audience.

“Inception” placed third on Friday with $5.5 million, but many believe it will ultimately outpace “Step Up” for a second place weekend.

“Dinner for Schmucks” took a big tumble from last week’s opening, landing in fourth with only $3.3 million. “Salt” scored $3.2 million to complete the top five.
