ABC’s “The Gates,” “Scoundrels” Debut to Weak Ratings

Add ABC’s “The Gates” and “Scoundrels” to the list of summer television ratings disappointments.

The new ABC scripted series entertained few Sunday, posting numbers in-line with similar disappointments from FOX (“The Good Guys”) and NBC (“Persons Unknown”).

Facing very little competition, “Scoundrels” was nonetheless only able to score a 1.3 premiere adults 18-49 rating with 5.17 million viewers. “The Gates” followed with 4.65 million viewers and a 1.5; though the latter series’ demo rating was enough to win the 10PM hour, it is hardly a figure worthy of celebration.

Neither show was a critical darling, but by the same token, neither was written off as a creative embarrassment–“The Gates,” in fact, scored fairly positive reviews from some noteworthy critics. At the end of the day, however, the viewers spoke, and their declaration was not kind to ABC’s schedule.

Other ratings: NBC’s US Open coverage (9.62 million viewers, 2.3) and “Minute to Win It” (3.51 million viewers, 1.1); FOX’s “Til Death” (1.52 million, 0.6) and “Sons of Tucson” (1.39 million, 0.6).

  1. WOW! I remember a time when most TV shows STARTED OUT SLOW–but were given time to actually BUILD AN AUDIENCE & GROW…..These days, if the pilot episode doesn’t look like a MOVIE & doesn’t BLAST-OFF ratings-wise like a ROCKET IMMEDIATELY—suddenly the show is considered weak…….I HIGHLY DISAGREE!!! I look forward to MORE episodes of “SCOUNDRELS” & “THE GATES”!!….I cannot WAIT!! 🙂

  2. I hope that ABC brings back The Gates…it is the best show that I have seen in a long time. Please do not cancel!!! In fact, bring it back to the fall line-up or a mid-season replacement to begin again in the fall 2011 line up. It is great!!!! The best thing since Buffy, Angel, & Forever Knight!!!

  3. Thanks for the posting. I have constantly noticed that most people are desirous to lose weight simply because wish to show up slim and attractive. On the other hand, they do not often realize that there are more benefits for losing weight in addition. Doctors insist that overweight people come across a variety of health conditions that can be perfectely attributed to their excess weight. The good news is that people that are overweight along with suffering from diverse diseases are able to reduce the severity of the illnesses by means of losing weight. You’ll be able to see a gradual but marked improvement in health when even a negligible amount of fat reduction is obtained.
