“American Idol” Journey Ends for Another; Results Show Yields Top Three

Top four week on “American Idol” has historically produced some of the show’s most shocking eliminations, and following a night in which all four contestants performed below their potential, what was to happen this week?

The Jamie Foxx-mentored “Songs from the Movies” theme produced some of the competition’s most forgettable performances, but ultimately, three of the season nine finalists were going to advance. Would the departing contestant be one of the underdogs in Michael Lynche and Casey James? Or, would “Idol” wave goodbye to one of its frontrunners in Lee DeWyze and Crystal Bowersox.

The answer was the former, but it is not as if the show was without any excitement. While Michael Lynche’s elimination was far from unfathomable, the interesting story came with who joined “Big Mike” in the bottom two.

It was not bottom three veteran Casey James. Nor, interestingly, was it Lee DeWyze, who most critics agree was the worst performer Tuesday night. Rather, it was odds-on favorite Crystal Bowersox, who made her first visit to the bottom group despite having finally gotten back in the judges’ good graces Tuesday.

Lee, Casey and Crystal return to the stage next week.
