“Nightmare on Elm Street” Dominates Box Office, Tops “Furry Vengeance”

Panned by critics, the “Nightmare on Elm Street” remake nonetheless lived up to its expectations of dominance, scoring an easy victory at the box office Friday.

“Elm Street” started the final weekend of the spring season with $15.8 million, which gave it an immense margin over all competitors. Horror films tend to trail off quickly in the days following their initial release, but “Nightmare” should still be good to top the $30 million mark this weekend.

Elsewhere, new release “Furry Vengeance” was a non-factor, scoring just $1.7 million in its opener. The film placed sixth Friday.

In second, meanwhile, was ongoing holdover “How to Train Your Dragon” ($2.6). “Date Night” came in third with $2.5 million, besting the $2.4 million for “The Back-Up Plan” and $1.9 million for “The Losers.”
