Did Frankie Edgar Upset BJ Penn?; UFC 112 Results

The most stacked foreign card to date, UFC 112 featured two title matches. While oddsmakers listed both bouts–Anderson Silva vs. Demian Maia and BJ Penn vs. Frankie Edgar–as fairly one-sided affairs, both of the challengers had the stylistic potential to achieve the upsets.

In the case of Silva-Maia, Silva has demonstrated some past vulnerability on the ground, so if Maia could find a way to bring Silva to the mat, he would stand a chance. In the case of Penn-Edgar, Penn had run into previous trouble with strong, overwhelming wrestlers (Matt Hughes and Georges St. Pierre), so if Edgar could find a way to apply a similar degree of relentless pressure, he, too, could achieve victory by outworking Penn.

On a card that also included Matt Hughes vs. Renzo Gracie, one of the aforementioned upsets happened. Which one was it? Results follow:

Jon Madsen b. Mostapha Al-Turk via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
Paul Kelly b. Matt Veach via submission (guillotine) at 3:41 of Round 2
DaMarques Johnson b. Brad Blackburn via TKO (strikes) at 2:08 of Round 3
Rick Story b. Nick Osipczak via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)
Phil Davis b. Alexander Gustafsson via submission (anaconda) at 4:55 of Round 1

Mark Munoz b. Kendall Grove via TKO (strikes) at 2:50 of Round 2
Rafael Dos Anjos b. Terry Etim via submission (armbar) at 4:30 of Round 2
Matt Hughes b. Renzo Gracie via TKO (strikes) at 4:40 of Round 3
Frankie Edgar b. B.J. Penn via unanimous decision (50-45, 48-47, 49-46) to win the UFC Lightweight Championship
Anderson Silva b. Demian Maia via unanimous decision (50-45, 50-45, 49-46) to retain the UFC Middleweight Championship
