With a drop-off well within acceptable territory, “Shutter Island” managed to score a second consecutive week atop the box office chart.

The Martin Scorsese-directed thriller added $22.2 million to its take, holding off competition from two high-profile new releases.

Of the two new films, buddy comedy “Cop Out” performed best, landing in second place for the weekend with an estimated $18.6 million. “The Crazies” followed with $16.5 million.

Though the total for “Crazies” was within expectations and solid for a film of the mod, its total marks a slight disappointment given the film’s glowing reviews. The excess of positive buzz evidently did little to escalate the film’s total above that which is typical for a horror remake.

“Avatar” ($14 million) and “Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief” ($9.8 million) rounded out the top five.

Weekend Top Ten (estimated):
1) Shutter Island – $22.2 million ($75.1 million)
2) Cop Out – $18.6 million
3) The Crazies – $16.5 million
4) Avatar – $14 million ($706.9 million)
5) The Lightning Thief – 9.8 million ($71.2 million)
6) Valentine’s Day – $9.5 million ($100.4 million)
7) Dear John – $5 million ($72.6 million)
8) The Wolfman – $4.1 million ($57.2 million)
9) Tooth Fairy – $3.5 million ($53.9 million)
10) Crazy Heart – $2.5 million ($25.1 million)
