Ellen DeGeneres’ “American Idol” Debut Sparks Ratings Jump

The early verdict on Ellen DeGeneres’ entry as the fourth “American Idol” judge is a positive one–Tuesday’s episode, which marked the comedian’s first full-time appearance on the panel, popped one of the show’s highest ratings this season.

Up about 13% from last week, “Idol” averaged a 10.1 adults 18-49 rating with 27.7 million viewers, according to preliminary data. The minute of overrun could send the number slightly higher when finals are calculated.

It should be noted that Hollywood remains a big attraction of the annual “Idol” competition, especially since the shock comedic appeal of the auditions has receded. The first Hollywood episode often does, therefore, produce a ratings spike–compared to last year, “Idol” was up 1% for the same episode.
