Nate Marquardt, Chael Sonnen Battle For Possible Title Shot; UFC 109 Results

February 7, 2010
By Brian Cantor

Since losing to Thales Leites, Nate Marquardt has been on a tear in pursuit of another shot at Anderson Silva’s UFC Middleweight Championship. Having dominated Martin Kampmann, Wilson Gouveia and, most notably, Demian Maia, Marquardt needed one more win to position himself in redemption.

In his way was Chael Sonnen, the dominant wrestler who most recently made Internet favorite Yushin Okami look like a mid-level fighter.

A heavy favorite, would Marquardt win a shot against the winner of Anderson Silva and Vitor Belfort? Or, would Chael Sonnen position himself as a worthy contender for the gold.

It was the underdog who came up big this time. Sonnen dominated Marquardt with his wrestling, relentlessly controlling Marquardt for the near entirety of the fight.

Marquardt made a last-ditch effort in the final minutes of the round with a guillotine attempt, a reversal and some ground and pound, but it was unable to change his fate. Chael Sonnen won.

Chael Sonnen defeated Nate Marquardt via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).
