Ke$ha’s “Animal” Starts Strong, Dominates Katharine McPhee (Album Sales)

A vocalist on two of the most-downloaded singles in recent memory–Flo Rida’s “Right Round” and her own “TiK ToK,” Ke$ha can add a hot-selling album to her list of early career accomplishments.

According to one-day sales extensions from Hits Daily Double, the raunchy electro-pop singer/songwriter’s debut album “Animal” will score more than 105,000 first week sales and compete with Susan Boyle’s “I Dreamed a Dream” for the top spot on next week’s Billboard 200.

The figure will easily top the first frame total for Katy Perry’s “One of the Boys,” which fell short of 50,000. Perry, purportedly a friend of Ke$ha’s, broke through in similar fashion with the edgy “I Kissed a Girl” in 2008.

It will also dominate Katharine McPhee’s “Unbroken,” the only other major new entry. The latest album from the “American Idol” finalist is pacing for about 13-15,000 first week sales.

  1. Ke$ha can dominate Kat’s album all she damn well wants, but all her music sucks (except Tik Tok) It’s your average pop crap that you get from everyone else. Katharine’s music will dramatically outweigh her sales. Her music is 100 times better

  2. No one’s going to defend the artistry of Ke$ha’s album, but I think it would surprise a lot of people. The production is fantastic – there’s a lot of cool, experimental stuff going on with electronics, beats and background vocals – and it really adds to the comedic, albeit somewhat trashy, lyrics.

Nonetheless, it’s definitely not your “average pop crap” — for better or worse, there’s no other mainstream 22 year old female singing about peeing in bottles of Dom, getting her hands in her teacher’s pants and demanding guys pull their d*cks out.

It’s 100% a stunt, but that doesn’t mean there’s no intrigue or value there–Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl” came across as a lame attempt to be outrageous, and she ended up generating 3 more solid hits (2 smashes) from her album.

Katharine McPhee is obviously more talented, although everything about her career has been so mis-managed. The singles released from album one were atrocious, and moreover, the whole PR campaign turned her into a cheap Maxim model instead of the elegant beauty she was on the show. The video for “Love Story” is just pathetic and not at all the McPhee that almost won “Idol.”

And, no, it’s not a double standard. It works for Ke$ha because it, despite being overplayed, is sincere–she clearly is a girl who goes out, gets trashed and meets boys. McPhee just isn’t the girl she’s portrayed over the past few years.

  3. Okay,I know alot about music. As for this I say that this artist know as ‘Ke$ha’ does not hold the standard of a true a nd talented artist. For McPhee hold that standard. Unlike Ke$ha, McPhee uses her voice to express the emotion of the words she wrote herself in the song. While Ke$ha shows no musical talent beyond a computer edited program. Her lyrics are flat and pointless, taking all meaning from what music is really about. Music is truley about expression one feelings. But the music these days that people are settling with lack anythign remotley talented. We Need more McPhees. More Mariah Careys. More people with the talent to bring justice to the music industry. Why settle for such lower standards as Ke$ha and Lady Gaga. If you have to edit your voice in a computer on EVERY song you sing, why are you singing? Kudos to McPhee!

  4. Well, I totally agree with Phillip. And i don’t understand why mcphee’s album is predicted to sell so little. If anyone heard the record it is seriously very good. I am a singer also and like her new style, very laid back, very well produced album, it;s one of the best albums if heard in years. She has got like 9 of her 13 tracks on their that are worth listening too.

  5. Katharine Mcphee’s album is good. Funny thing is I bought both CDs. Kesha’s (I refuse to use the $) cd is a fun party cd while Katharine’s is more intimate and slow. I can understand how Kesha’s cd is more popular bc it’s more catchy but after a while you get sick of it. Katharine’s on the other hand sounds boring at first but then it really grows on you. I’m still listening to Katharine’s cd and I love it more each day. Her voice is phenomenal.
