“Avatar,” “The Blind Side” Hit Box Office Milestones on New Year’s

En route to its third consecutive weekend box office victory, “Avatar” rang the New Year in with a milestone box office performance.

The film grossed an estimated $25 million on New Year’s Day, dominating the competition and officially crossing the $300 million domestic mark. Its cumulative total is now just shy of $309 million.

“Sherlock Holmes” followed distantly Friday with $14.9 million, narrowly topping “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel” ($13 million).

“It’s Complicated” was good for fourth with an additional $7.1 million.

While “Avatar” celebrated a fast surge to $300 million, it was not the only film to enjoy a milestone moment Friday. Sleeper smash “The Blind Side” crossed the $200 million mark Friday with an additional $4.5 million at the box office.
