After generating headlines for setting the midnight opening record, “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” achieved another record in its first full day of box office action.

The film grossed $72.7 million Friday, which tops the all-time mark for an opening day. “The Dark Knight” previously held the record with $67.2 million in its first day of release.

“The Dark Knight” went on to earn $158.4 million in the first full weekend. The weekend estimates for “New Moon” will be available Sunday morning.

Meanwhile, new release “The Blind Side” was solid in second place Friday as star Sandra Bullock worked her magic with older women. Despite being a football film, the movie played better with older females (59% of moviegoers were female) as it earned $10.9 million Friday.

Holdover “2012″ dropped significantly to $8.1 million Friday.
