UFC News: Major Main Event Could Replace Brock Lesnar vs. Carwin

With Brock Lesnar’s health reportedly not improving to a point that makes his ability to train for a UFC 108 bout with Shane Carwin a certainty, the leading mixed martial arts promotion is looking into another heavyweight main event for the show.

Multiple sources report that UFC is in the early stages of putting together Cain Velasquez vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.

That is not to say Lesnar-Carwin, which had already been moved from UFC 106 to 108 to accommodate Heavyweight Champion Lesnar’s condition, is definitely off for the date. But UFC is at least giving itself a backup option in the event that Brock cannot defend his title on that show, which is apparently becoming an increasingly likely possibility.

The Velasquez-Nogueira fight would establish a number one contender for the heavyweight belt; because both are coming off impressive victories, the initial plan was to keep the two separated so that both could be in line for a shot at the gold.

UFC 108 takes place on January 2, 2010.
