Future Of “Southland” Looking Good

Variety reported this weekend that NBC and Warner Brothers have reportedly worked out a deal that would allow “Southland” to move to another network.

“Southland,” which was abruptly canceled by NBC prior to its season two premiere, has been a subject of intense television gossip. One of the best reviewed NBC shows in years, the gritty cop drama had nonetheless bled viewers in its short first season and gave NBC no indication of its viability as a breakout.

The network reportedly, however, played hardball in negotiations with producing studio Warner Bros, demanding a high, upfront licensing fee for the six second season episodes that had already been produced.

With the deal now apparently done Warner seems positioned to shop the series to other networks. TNT is quite interested, according to Variety and THR, and would likely air the seven first season episodes and six second season episodes as a thirteen episode set, should it ultimately pick up the show.

There had been talk that another cable network was also interested, although most insiders generally believe TNT is the frontrunner to grab “Southland.”
