Kanye West has become notorious for his candid comments–particularly at awards shows. But his outburst at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, which involved him interrupting Taylor Swift’s Best Female Video acceptance speech to put over Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” as the more deserving video, was nothing if not shocking.
As West grabbed the microphone from the “You Belong with Me” singer and touted “Single Ladies” as one of the best videos of all-time, Swift–and much of the audience-stood in shock. When West handed the microphone back to Swift, she looked completely stunned.
The live MTV audience, and later singer Beyonce, showed love for the clearly-hurt Swift throughout the broadcast, but for many fans and viewers, nothing was going to eclipse the “did that just happen” incident from earlier in the night.
It simply took mention of the name “Kanye West” to draw boos from the crowd later on, and based on web reports citing Kanye’s personal blog, the rapper agrees he was in the wrong.

BEYONCE’S VIDEO WAS THE BEST OF THIS DECADE!!!! I’M SORRY TO MY FANS IF I LET YOU GUYS DOWN!!!! I’M SORRY TO MY FRIENDS AT MTV. I WILL APOLOGIZE TO TAYLOR 2MRW. WELCOME TO THE REAL WORLD!!!! What Kanye did was very disrespectful even if what he thought was right. Beyonce may have had the better video but she didn’t get the votes in this category to win. What I don’t understand is if Taylor sings country music, why does she remix her songs for pop? It is just one award show, I think she will be just fine. Looks like after the show, she was enjoying the attention. Kanye should just be banned from award shows.

I think what Kanye West did was extremely disrespectful! He had no right to ruin Taylor Swift’s winning moment. I don’t think his apology was sincere the least bit, because he still managed to include the fact that he thought Beyonce’s video was better. I honestly think Taylor’s video was better. I’m not a Taylor Swift fan but I support her and I really like her video. Whereas, I didn’t really like the Single Ladies video. Kanye.. You’re going to have to do much better or you will lose all your fans! Taylor.. I’m sorry that happened to you && you very much deserved that award!
