Kanye West Puts “Lockdown” On Taylor Swift Speech, Rips MTV Award Decision

September 13, 2009
By Brian Cantor

Though host Russell Brand’s opening monologue was sexually charged, it did not feature the edgy content necessary to rival last year’s controversy. Unluckily (or luckily, depending on your level of cynicism) for MTV, there was no way this year’s MTV Video Music Awards ceremony was going off without a media-friendly story.

In the midst of expressing appreciation for winning the Best Female music video award–the first of the night–Taylor Swift (for “You Belong with Me”) found herself interrupted by “Love Lockdown” rapper Kanye West. West, who is no stranger to offering candid criticism during awards shows, ripped on the voting process for not awarding Beyonce’s acclaimed “Single Ladies” video with the top female prize.

West handed the microphone back to Swift, but the country star, visibly rattled by what took place, said nothing (or at least nothing that was picked up by the television broadcast–she did appear to say a final “thank you” to the live crowd).

WOW. Larry, you damned hick. That’s PATHETIC. Everyone assumes Kanye’s racist? For THIS?! Good god. How does a terrible song like that beat out Beyonce’s only worthwhile song in like 4 years?? It’s a travesty. It’s a popularity contest. Mad props to Kanye for calling things the way they are. MTV caters a glorified popularity contest. Oh and thanks for jumping on the racist bandwagon Donna. YOU’RE the racist one, immediately claiming he’s racist for having and voicing an opinion. NOTHING HAS CHANGED.

Larry, people like u deserve to be tied to a horse and dragged for miles till u die of anguish, I cant believe Kanye West is being called racist while idiots like you live and breathe.

Larry aside, Kanye shouldn’t have done what he did. it wasn’t in good taste.

What Kanye did is the same as what Joe Wilson did at Obama’s speech the other day. Both were rude and racist.
