UFC News: Cain Velasquez’s New Opponent, Title Contender’s Return

— With UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin believed to be a done deal as the UFC 106 main event, UFC quickly secured a new opponent for heavyweight contender Cain Velasquez.

AOL Fanhouse reports that Velasquez will likely fight Ben Rothwell at UFC 104. Debuting in the UFC, Rothwell made a name for himself in the IFL before moving to the Affliction promotion. When Affliction folded earlier this summer, Rothwell was picked up by the UFC.

Velasquez had been slated to face Carwin in a number one contender’s bout at UFC 104, but the promotion instead decided to grant Carwin an immediate shot at Lesnar’s title.

— MMA Junkie reports that UFC is looking at booking Thiago Alves, who lost a decision to Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre at UFC 100, against Paulo Thiago at UFC 107. The latter Thiago also lost at UFC 100; he suffered a one-sided decision defeat to Jon Fitch.
