Emmy Nominations Revealed: Big Surprises in Comedy Field

Because of the consistent growth in quality of television, as well as the self-contained nature of most programs (unlike small-time “indie” music and films that often get overlooked at awards shows, most of the best-reviewed shows are in contention), Emmy Nominations are as coveted as ever. And the Academy was sure to shake things up this year, bringing a number of first-time, surprising comedies into the mix for one of the night’s biggest prizes.

Though perennial series “Entourage,” “The Office” and “30 Rock” (the winner for two years running) predictably made the Best Comedy Series race, long-time nominee “Two and a Half Men” did not get the nod. Rather, voters went with first-time nominees “Family Guy,” “Flight of the Conchords,” “How I Met Your Mother” and “Weeds” to complete the stacked field. “Weeds” has long appeared due for a nod due to the television community’s embrace of Showtime’s original programming, while “How I Met Your Mother,” despite being one of the most buzzed about comedies on television, had reportedly never even advanced to the semifinal round (top ten) of voting. “Flight of the Conchords,” one of the quirkiest comedies on television, got its due this year even as the buzz declined, while “Family Guy” became the first animated comedy since “The Flintstones” to earn a shot at the big prize.

Nominations were mostly predictable on the drama front–“Breaking Bad,” “Damages,” “Dexter,” “House,” “Lost,” “Mad Men” and “Big Love.” “Big Love”‘s selection over “24” is the only noteworthy surprise.

“The Big Bang Theory” was upstaged by fellow CBS comedy “How I Met Your Mother” in the best comedy department, but series star Jim Parsons did score a lead actor nomination. Other comedy actor nominees are Alec Baldwin (30 Rock), Steve Carell (The Office), Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords), Tony Shaloub (Monk) and Charlie Sheen (Two and a Half Men).

Actress-wise, comedy nominations included Christina Applegate (Samantha Who), Toni Collette (United States of Tara), Tina Fey (30 Rock), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (The New Adventures of Old Christine), Sarah Silverman (The Sarah Silverman Program) and Mary Louise-Parker (Weeds). America Ferrera missed out on an “Ugly Betty” nomination for the first time.

Drama-wise, the lead star nomination list notably lacks Kiefer Sutherland (24) (though Sutherland did earn a nod for the 24: Redemption movie) and James Spader (Boston Legal, which finished its run this year), two past winners whose series did not lose critical respect. Voters instead pulled for Simon Baker of hit new series “The Mentalist” to join the expected drama contenders list, while “Mad Men”‘s Elisabeth Moss jumped into contention for lead actress. “Friday Night Lights” stars Connie Britton and Kyle Chandler went another critically-acclaimed year without a nomination.

The biggest actor-related surprise, though, is in the supporting department. After multiple years of Jeremy Piven victories in the identical Supporting Actor in a Comedy field (Piven, Neil Patrick Harris, Jon Cryer, Rainn Wilson and Kevin Dillon), this year’s nominations list drops the “Entourage” star from the mix. The other four perennials (including Piven’s “Entourage” colleague Dillon) remain in contention, with “30 Rock” actors Tracy Morgan and Jack MacBryer getting recognition this year. Actress-wise, Emmy voters recognized two “Saturday Night Live” stars (Amy Poehler and Kristen Wiig), as well as Jane Krakowski (30 Rock), Kristin Chenoweth (Pushing Daisies), Elizabeth Perkins (Weeds) and Vanessa Williams (Ugly Betty).
