Weekend Box Office: “Transformers” and “Ice Age” Stand Tied

In a rare occurrence, the weekend box office estimates were unable to declare a winner in the “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” versus “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs” battle. Both sit atop the box office with $42.5 million.

Actual data on Monday will crown a winner, but as the July 4th weekend ends, neither film pulled ahead on the estimates sheet. The crown could tentatively be given to “Ice Age” on the basis of its higher per-theatre gross ($10,368 to $10,038), but nothing definitive will be stated until the actuals are in.

What is definite is that “Transformers” is less than $10 million away from reaching the $300 million milestone, while “Ice Age” sits below $70 million for its five-day opening take.

“Public Enemies” was a distant third for the weekend, earning $26.2 million over the past three days. “The Proposal” and “The Hangover” completed the top five with $12.8 million and $10.4 million. “The Hangover” achieved a special milestone in moving past $200 million of cumulative domestic gross; “Beverly Hills Cop” and “Wedding Crashers” were previously the only two R-rated comedies to reach that mark. “The Hangover” will pass the “Wedding Crashers” total this week and is less than $30 million from topping “Cop” as the top R-rated comedy in history.
