“Transformers” In Tight Box Office Race With “Ice Age”

The July 4th weekend does not yet have a clear box office winner–following Friday night’s outing, “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” and “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs” are in a tight contest for the top spot.

“Transformers” won Friday night by a narrow margin–$17.8 million to $17 million–but with family comedy “Ice Age” likely to perform particularly well Saturday (a moviegoing day typically of greater appeal to children and their families), it is far from out of the race.

Regardless of its final slot on the box office hierarchy this weekend, “Transformers” is performing well–it is less than $32 million away from the $300 million mark, a milestone it will undoubtedly attain in the next few days.

“Ice Age” had earned a cumulative gross of $41.9 million after Friday’s receipts.

“Public Enemies” will land a distant third this weekend; it earned $10.1 million on Friday, bringing its cumulative total to $25 million.
