Weekend Box Office: Big Victory For “The Proposal”

Friday’s numbers held up, and the Sandra Bullock-Ryan Reynolds romantic comedy “The Proposal” cruised to an easy weekend box office victory.

The film easily posted Sandra Bullock’s best-ever opening figure, scoring an estimated $34.1 million from 3,056 screens. “The Hangover,” its closest competition, earned $26.9 million, which marked only an 18.1% decline from last week’s gross. The well-reviewed comedy’s cumulative gross is now at $152.9 million, and it now appears a lock to top the gross of big budget blockbuster “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.”

“Up” followed in third ($21.3 million), topping new release “Year One” ($20.2 million). Though “Year One” only placed fourth, it still fell within its projected range, an accomplishment given its absolutely terrible reviews.

“The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3” was fifth with $11.3 million.

On the limited side, Woody Allen’s “Whatever Works,” which stars Larry David, opened to $281,000 on nine screens.

Weekend Top Ten:
1) The Proposal – $34.1 million
2) The Hangover – $26.9 million ($152.9 million)
3) Up – $21.3 million ($224.1 million)
