Weekend Box Office: Comeback Win for “Up”

Friday night belonged to comedy newcomer “The Hangover,” but “Up” expectedly rallied in the latter part of this weekend to secure a second box office victory, according to early estimates.

“Up” grossed an estimated $44.2 million, producing a victory margin over less than one million over “The Hangover” ($43.3 million). “Land of the Lost,” which competed with “Hangover” as a new comedy this week, was a distant third with $19.5 million.

Holdover films “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian” and “Star Trek” filled out the top five, earning $14.7 million and $8.4 million, respectively. New film “My Life in Ruins,” which opened moderately wide at 1164 theatres, barely made a mark, scoring $3.2 million for ninth place.
